One of the features you have as a registered user is to save threads.

I feel like a completely moron but I’d never been able to find out where these saved threads were listed until today, when I looked it up. Apparently I am not the only one who has trouble finding it. Many people, including myself, went to my account/profile page on reddit and looked for a ‘saved’ tab of some sorts. It turns out this is not where the saved threads are listed at all.

The link to view saved threads is not stored in your user section, but is shown on the homepage (how did I miss it?) or on the individual subreddit pages. See my screenshot below.

I hope this helps a few people like me, who were looking in completely the wrong place for this link.

Anyway – I’ve been talking quite a lot about Twitter recently and general social media.

I’ve said this before of course, but social media truly is great for both driving direct traffic to your website and for general search engine optimisation. Of course, different services meet different needs.

Take a look at some of the following social media related articles I’ve written recently.

Introduction to Microblogging and Twitter – A general and gentle introduction to what Twitter and microblogging in general actually is.

Tweets to appear in live Google – The big announcement that live, real-time Twitter results will be fed directly into Google and Bing for the latest trending topics.

Social experiment splitting up Tweets by emotion – A very quick social experiment I set up which splits up updates from Twitter by their emotion or moods.

Google Buzz as a Possible Competitor to Twitter – Will Google Buzz be a possible competitor to Twitter? There really was a huge buzz about the service initially, but now it has died down, there is very little chatter about Google’s microblogging service right now.

How Microblogging and Social Media can help with Search Engine Optimisation – A general overview and insight into how the differing web-based social media services out there can truly help you drive traffic directly to your websites and to boost your search engine rankings.

Specifically, microblogging is fantastic for driving traffic to a website. The build up of following around a specific niche almost guarantees a visit from your followers, because they followed you, so they are very likely to be interested in what you have to say.

What have your experiences been using Twitter to drive traffic?

A complete success or slow progress so far? What problems have you faced when using Twitter or building up an online community following?

Some people think of search engine optimisation as being strictly building links and content, and that was very much the case before the advent of microblogging and social networking. Now being social is very important for search engine optimisation. Using social networking, social bookmarking and other such sites can really help boost your traffic, both via increased rankings and faster indexing in search engines as well as the potential for viral marketing and promotion of your content.

Let’s go over the main points. Using social methods of promotion for your website can help:

To get your site indexed faster – Promoting your site via services such as Reddit, Digg, Twitter, StumbleUpon and blog pinging services can ensure your site is indexed in search engines as fast as possible.

To increase search engine rankings – Although many social bookmarking and similar sites now use ‘nofollow’ rel tags on their links, there are still several services which do not. Reddit, a social news/bookmarking website that I have recently become addicted to, is a perfect example of a social website which does not use the ‘nofollow’ rel tag on any of its links.

To virally promote your content – Social bookmarking and news websites are great for promoting websites and interesting or funny website content in a viral nature. This can have a cascading effect for content this people find really interesting. To virally promote content, always ensure you post links to the relevant categories and in a way that makes the content seem interesting, either be being funny, outstanding or highly controversial.

Overall, social networking and bookmarking websites are a fantastic tool for website and content promotion and for improving your search engine results page rankings. Most importantly, you should promote good quality and interesting content without looking incredibly spammy or promote spam like web content… there is enough of that on the Web already!

Facebook will soon be implementing privacy changes shortly will will involve the elimination of the current regional friend networks which exist. This change is being justified by the fact that most regional networks have become so large that privacy changes based upon restricting within these groups becomes meaningless or alternatively too restrictive.

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, wrote the following in an open letter to Facebook.

“However, as Facebook has grown, some of these regional networks now have millions of members and weve concluded that this is no longer the best way for you to control your privacy. Almost 50 percent of all Facebook users are members of regional networks, so this is an important issue for us. If we can build a better system, then more than 100 million people will have even more control of their information.

The plan weve come up with is to remove regional networks completely and create a simpler model for privacy control where you can set content to be available to only your friends, friends of your friends, or everyone.

Were adding something that many of you have asked for – the ability to control who sees each individual piece of content you create or upload. In addition, well also be fulfilling a request made by many of you to make the privacy settings page simpler by combining some settings. If you want to read more about this, we began discussing this plan back in July.

Since this update will remove regional networks and create some new settings, in the next couple of weeks well ask you to review and update your privacy settings. Youll see a message that will explain the changes and take you to a page where you can update your settings. When youre finished, well show you a confirmation page so you can make sure you chose the right settings for you. As always, once youre done youll still be able to change your settings whenever you want.”

What do you think? Should Facebook change to this system? Are the regional networking features redundant now or are regional networks useful to you?

Twitter has signed deals with Microsoft and Google to put microblogging messages sent via the microblogging service (‘tweets’) into the Microsoft Bing and Google search engine indexes.

This deal will mean tweets will appear from Twitter alongside normal Google and Bing search results. Without a doubt, this will make Twitter an even larger SEO tool than it already is. Constantly the microblogging service is bombarded with spam bots attempting to promote their services, which is certainly an issue when those the tweets those bots submit provide very little in the way of useful information or news.

With blogging slowly being seen as an activity which can be done professionally, this deal could potentially open the doorway to professional microbloggers, a promotional medium which has so far been the realm of mainly automated agents (or bots) and celebrity/government public relations agencies.

Regarding this deal, Microsoft have already make a move to set up a separate, standalone search page on Bing for microblogging results from Twitter. This is likely to be a preceding step towards integrating the tweets into the main Bing search results. Google will be doing the later from the start, when its microblogging service is rolled out “in the coming months”according to Marissa Mayer, vice president of search products and user experience at Google in a recent blog post.

For both companies, this deal will mean the search engines will have direct syncronised access to the tweets almost as soon as they are posted on to Twitter’s microblogging site.
